Dust buildup is a common concern for Houston homeowners, especially in newer homes with tight construction and attic insulation. During a recent service call in Houston, TX, our team inspected a 2-year-old Carrier gas system after the homeowner noticed excessive airborne dust throughout the house. We performed a full system inspection, opening and checking the return plenums, supply boxes, blower wheel, furnace compartment, and all accessible duct connections. Our goal was to locate any air leaks, bypasses, or mechanical issues that could allow dust to enter the airflow. After a thorough evaluation, no mechanical failures or duct leaks were found. The HVAC system itself was operating properly and sealed as designed. However, we identified that the home uses cellulose insulation, which naturally produces fine airborne particles that can circulate through the home—especially when filtration is insufficient. To immediately improve indoor air quality, we replaced the 20x25x4 media filter, restoring proper filtration efficiency. We also recommended adding a whole-home air purifier to help capture finer particles that standard filters may miss. Homeowner takeaway: If you’re dealing with persistent dust in a Houston home, the issue isn’t always a broken HVAC system. Homes with cellulose insulation often benefit from high-efficiency filtration and air purification, even when the equipment is newer.
