Is Your AC Frozen? Here's What It Could Mean — and What to Do Next

A frozen air conditioner might sound like a good thing in the middle of a Texas summer, but it's actually a serious warning sign that something is wrong with your system.

We recently serviced a 2009 American Standard gas system for a Bellaire homeowner. During the visit, our technician measured the supply air temperature at 71°F at the plenum and recorded system pressures at just 75 PSI. Both readings pointed to a problem: the unit was frozen, and the system was not performing the way it should.

So what causes an AC to freeze up?

There are several reasons this happens, and each one is worth understanding as a homeowner:

1. A Dirty Air Filter. When your filter becomes clogged, airflow through the system is restricted. Without adequate airflow, the evaporator coil gets too cold, and ice begins to form. It's one of the most common, and most preventable, causes of a frozen unit.

2. A Failed Blower Motor. The blower motor is the component inside your furnace or air handler responsible for moving air across the evaporator coil and circulating it throughout your home. If this motor fails or begins to underperform, airflow drops significantly, and just like a clogged filter, the lack of movement causes the coil temperature to plummet and ice to build up. A failed blower motor can be easy to overlook because the system may still appear to be running, even when it isn't doing its job.

3. A Refrigerant Leak. Refrigerant is the substance responsible for cooling the air in your home. When levels drop due to a leak, the system loses its ability to function properly, causing pressure to fall and the coil to freeze.

Because either issue could be the root cause, we first checked the condition of the filters. Since they had been recently changed and looked clean, that ruled out the first issue. That pointed us toward a refrigerant leak, and rather than make assumptions, we recommended a professional leak search to locate the source of the problem before moving forward with any repairs.

Proper diagnosis is always the first step. Skipping it leads to unnecessary costs and repairs that don't actually solve the problem.

What Should You Do If Your AC Freezes Up?

·Shut the system off and allow it to thaw completely before restarting

·Check your air filter and replace it if it appears dirty or clogged

·Call Hage Energy — we'll perform a thorough inspection, identify the root cause, and walk you through the best path forward

Takeaway for Bellaire Homeowners: If your AC is blowing warm air, running constantly, or you notice ice forming on the unit, don't just let it run. Turn it off, let it thaw, and call Hage Energy to find out what's really going on before the problem gets worse.
